Australian States Tighten Their Borders And Test For Omicron Variants

Australian states tighten their borders and test for Omicron variants

Sydney, Nov 28, 2008 : As health authorities attempt to sequence the Omicron variant for arrivals from southern African countries, the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria have imposed 72-hour isolation requirements on all international arrivals.
NSW health officials confirmed that two of the 14 arrivals from south African countries had tested positive to Covid-19 on Sunday morning and had begun urgent genomic sequencing for Omicron variant, Xinhua news agency reported.

The variant, which is believed to be more infective than any other strains, was first identified in South Africa on Friday and was flagged by the World Health Organization (WHO), as a “variant concern”.

All recent arrivals from nine countries in southern Africa were asked by NSW health authorities for self-isolation for 14 days.

Passenger from flights with positive cases would be quarantined at a special facility.

Despite mounting concerns, Dominic Perrottet, Premier of NSW, said that the state would continue to pursue its reopening plans “for now”.

Perrottet stated that this is a reminder of the long journey ahead, and that Sky News has always had a fair approach.

Greg Hunt, the Australian federal Health Minister, announced Saturday afternoon that non-residents from nine southern African countries would not be allowed to enter Australia.

All flights from these countries would be halted for 14 days as a matter of precaution.

Deborah Cromer, Kirby Institute of University of New South Wales (UNSW), said that while it was “unsettling”, the emergence of a new version was not surprising.

Cromer said that viruses are constantly evolving and taking on new forms. This is why it is important to determine the impact of an emerging strain.

She stated that the closure of borders would only buy scientists time to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccines against the new variant.

“Closing borders may give us some time to collect the data (vaccine efficacy versus Omicron), but as we have seen with Delta and the original strain, a virus will eventually find its way through these barriers,” she said.

In Australia, there have not been any confirmed cases of the Omicron variant.
