“The evidence is there for the brown coal plants in Victoria, which are burning Australia’s most polluting coal.” stated Victorian Greens acting climate spokesperson Tim Read.

“They’re old, undependable and emit toxic pollutants which is affecting the health of communities in the area.”

The Greens remain a minor opposition in Australian political life. However, a shift of people in the country’s federal election has boosted their influence.

The three coal plants are scheduled to shut by 2048.

The Greens claimed that this is at contradiction with predictions made by the UN that dealing with climate change will require the closing of all coal-powered power stations by 2030.

In line with of the plan the Greens would establish a job-for job assurance for coal workers.

This will be backed by an A$10 billion ($7 billion) investment in the generation of renewable energy and storage.

“Our bill would establish the expiration date for coal mining and coal burning and provide an even more urgent timeframe to shut down our three coal plants with an equitable transition for communities and workers,” added Read.

On August 12th, Australia’s energy ministers approved making reducing emissions an important national energy goal.

“It (The energy goals) is a clear signal for our market participants in the energy sector that they should include emission reductions in the work they undertake,” said federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen.

The rising energy prices throughout the Australian winter, triggered by a myriad of broken coal plants, have put the nation’s dependence on coal into a new light.

This month, the federal government approved for the first offshore wind power zone along the coast of Victoria as an indication of the growing number of renewable power projects in Victoria.
