Brisbane, Dec 8, 2008 : Pat Cummins is off to a great start in his career as Test captain.He scored five wickets on day one at The Gabba’s Ashes Test.Cummins was the star of the day with 5/38 in 13.1 runs on a day where Australia’s fast bowlers destroyed England’s batting order, scoring just 147 runs in 50.1 overs.
Cummins’ Ashes captaincy was a baptism of fire, especially after he lost The Gabba’s toss.The 28-year old showed no nerves as he carried out his job of being the Australian strike bowler.

He first dismissed Ben Stokes in his first competitive cricket match since July.

He forced him to defend a rising delivery with extra bounce to MarnusLabuschagne at the third slip.

After lunch, Cummins struck immediately as a well-set Haseeb Hameed was drawn in front and nicked by Steve Smith at second slip.

Cummins took no time to get the better of Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler, grabbing a maiden five wicket win against England on his first day of Test captaincy.

Cummins is now the first Australian captain to win a five-wicket Ashes Test match since Richie Benaud’s 1962 victory.

He was also the first captain to win an Ashes Test with a five-wicket score, since Bob Willis in 1982/83.

Cummins became the first Australian captain to score five wickets in Australia since Anil Kumble, India’s great leg spinner, in 2008.

Courtney Walsh, a West Indies great, was the last fast-bowling captain to take a five-wicket win in Australia in 1997.

Cummins led his team to the ground, holding the Kookaburra Ball aloft while a large crowd at The Gabba gave a standing ovation for the 47th Test captain from Australia.

Cummins has had a remarkable start to his Test captaincy journey.
