Apple sues NSO Group over attack on iPhones with Pegasus

San Francisco, Nov 24, : Apple, the tech giant, has filed a lawsuit against NSO Group, an Israel-based company, for a permanent injunction prohibiting NSO Group’s use of any Apple software, services, or devices.
The company acknowledged that a small percentage of its users may have been affected by an exploit by the NSO Group to install Pegasus onto Apple devices.

“State-sponsored actors such as the NSO Group spend millions on sophisticated surveillance technology without effective accountability.This must change,” Craig Federighi (Apple’s senior vice president for Software Engineering) stated.

He stated that Apple devices are the most secure consumer hardware available — but private companies creating state-sponsored spyware have made it more dangerous,” late Tuesday.

Apple’s complaint contains new information about NSO Group’s ‘FORCEDENTRY’ exploit, which was used to hack into victim’s Apple devices and install the latest version NSO Group spyware product, Pegasus.

The Citizen Lab, an academic research group at the University of Toronto, first identified the exploit.

The company stated that the spyware was used to attack a few Apple users with dangerous malware and spyware.

Apple stated that it will notify the small number users it discovered might have been targeted by FORCEDENTRY.

Apple joins Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, and Apple in suing NSO Group, the spyware maker Pegasus.

NSO Group’s flagrant violations against US federal and state law are also part of the Apple lawsuit.These violations arose from its attempts to attack Apple and its users.

Apple announced that it would contribute $10 million to organizations involved in cyber-surveillance advocacy and research, in order to strengthen its efforts against cyber attacks.
