Android 14 will provide direct satellite connectivity to phones

San Francisco, Sep 2 : Tech giant Google announced that the forthcoming Android 14 will “support our partners in making possible the whole of this” following SpaceX and T-Mobile revealed plans to offer direct satellite connectivity for smartphones.
On Twitter, Hiroshi Lockheimer, Senior Vice President of Platforms and Ecosystems at Google described the way it “was an uphill task to get 3G and Wi-Fi functioning” on the very first available Android handset (HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1) in 2008, reports 9To5Google.

“Wild to consider user experience for phones that connect to satellites.The first time we introduced G1 in 2008 it was a challenge to get 3G and Wi-Fi running,” Lockheimer tweeted.

“Now we are creating designs for satellites.Cool! We are excited to work with our partners in enabling all of this in the next version of Android.”

The Android team is currently “designing for satellites” and this feature is scheduled for “next version of Android” that Tech giant Google has confirmed to be Android 14.

The OS release is expected to be released in mid- to late 2023 according to the report.

According to Lockheimer in comparison to conventional LTE as well as 5G connectivity “user experiences on phones that connect to satellites” will differ.

Satellite connectivity for phones is primarily targeted at emergencies and eliminating of dead zones on the cellular network the report stated.
