India will be playing New Zealand in Kanpur’s first Test without six of their regular members.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bangrah, Mohammad Shami, Rishabh Pan, Jasprit Bemrah, and Jasprit Bumrah have all been rested. However, KL Rahul sustained a thigh injury.Ajinkya Rahane is leading the side.Kohli will be back for the second Test in Mumbai, and will captain the team.

The last time India was without their key Test players was during the tour to Australia.Injuries were the main reason for that series but players here have been given a break from bio-bubble fatigue.

One thing is certain: India has played with a winning mentality on both occasions.

Rohit and Rahul were the openers in India’s Test series against England. They produced excellent results for the team.Shubman Gill (in their absence) and Mayank Agarwal (in their place) were the openers in the first innings.Gill’s fifty runs (52) were impressive, even though Mayank couldn’t score 13 runs.

Both Gill and Agarwal have been India openers before, and in difficult foreign conditions.

India will have four options to choose from when it comes to opening their South Africa series. They will have Rohit, Rahul and Shubman as options.

They could also bat in the middle order, and they have done it at different stages of their careers.

In Kohli’s absence, ShreyasIyer also seized his chance with both hands.

The 26-year-old batted in the middle order and scored a remarkable century in his Test debut. It will be interesting to see if Iyer is still in the side when Virat arrives for the next Test.

He was not among the first XI preference if KL Rahul’s injury had it not been.Indian fans have witnessed Karun Nair being replaced even after his triple century.

Nair scored a remarkable 303 in a 2016 home series against England. However, he was forced to rest for the next game to make room for Ajinkya Rahane, who had missed the Test match.

Iyer’s arrival in Test cricket, with a great century, and Gill being back among runs would put pressure on Rahane or Pujara.Their place in the side has been a topic of discussion among experts and Indian fans alike.

They haven’t scored consistently over the past two years. Both Pujara (26) & Rahane (35) had decent starts in the ongoing first Test but failed to capitalize on it and score big.

The Indian team for the South Africa series series will be announced in a few days.Even if the experienced duo board that flight with Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid, they might have to make some tough calls if Pujara or Rahane do not perform well in the remaining innings of the ongoing series.

Suryakumar Yadav is also on the bench, with a great record in domestic cricket.

Flamboyant Rishabh Pan has been allowed to rest for the Test series, and Wriddhiman Saha will be playing as a first-choice wicketkeeper.

Saha was unable to play on Day 3, due to stiffness in his neck.In his absence, KS Bharat has been brilliant with his glove work behind wickets.

The bowling department also has a problem with too many players. The ongoing series against the Kiwis has been selected by pacers Umesh Yadav and Prasidh Kana, Prasidh Siraj and spinners Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin.

Experienced campaigners like Jasprit Bhumrah, Mohammad Shami, and R Ashwin will return to South Africa for the tour.

If required, you can also consider Bhuvneshwar and Shardul Thakur for selection.

Washington Sundar, a fit player who performed well on the Australia tour, is also an option.Add to that, an India A side is already playing in South Africa.

There, batters Abhimanyu Panchal (103) and Priyank Pantchal (96), and bowlers Navdeep Sainsi (2/67) and Arzan Nagwaswalla (2) have played in the first unofficial Test to prove their case.

The Indian selectors and team management have a lot of talent.

It will be interesting to see who makes it into the South Africa tour squad.

The Indian men’s cricket team will play three Tests and three ODIs starting in December across four venues — Johannesburg and Centurion, Paarl and Cape Town against Proteas.
