Amid opposition boycott, Rajya Sabha passes two bills

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : On Wednesday, the Rajya Sabha passed two bills.The opposition boycotted proceedings to show solidarity with the suspended members.The opposition demanded that suspension be revoked.However, the chair refused to grant that request and stated that the leaders of both the house and the opposition should resolve the issues themselves.
The House passed the Assisted Reproductive Technology Regulation Bill, 2021, and the Surrogacy Regulation Bill.However, opposition was absent and BJP members made a joke about the fact that the opposition had forgotten its responsibilities.

During this time, the suspended MPs protested in the parliament premises.On Wednesday, NCP MP Supriya Sule brought home a cooked lunch for all 12 members.

After the Rajya Sabha refused to reconsider the suspension of 12 MPs, the opposition resorted to sloganeering in the Rajya Sabha.The chairman stated that the decision to suspend MPs was made by the house, not the chair.

It should be resolved between the leaders from the treasury benches and the opposition benches.He adjourned his house until 12 noon amid the chaos.

After the house resumed, opposition members pressed for the same demand again, but the Deputy Chairman declined the grievances.Following which, like-minded opposition parties walked out and Question Hour continued without incident.

The chair allowed discussion about the bills at 2 p.m.Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the bills were good for surrogate moms because they provide protection to these women and protect their interests.The bill was passed later.
