Navalny explained that his move was in response to the deprivation of about 600,000 prisoners in Russia’s prisons. However he said he would be willing to advocate for the rights of the guards in the event of need, according to the news agency dpa.

“I mean, what’s the reason? I’m a colony employee.A sewer. Also, other convicts are employees as well.Guards are also workers of the colony.

In terms of our rights to work, we’re the same.We can join unions to protect our rights.” he said.

At first, the 45-year-old opposition figure was told that the camp administration considered his application as an act of humour, before declaring the application “illegal”.

“Normally you could be killed in prison for doing something similar,” he said in one of the number of tweets.

Navalny was reflecting on the fact that in the past he has urged others to join trade unions, and he should do it as well, he said, “even even if it’s in the most hazardous area to do so where disobedience, strikes and gatherings are not permitted”.

People who strike are at risk of being tortured, said Navalny who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt and was imprisoned for a few months despite a worldwide protest.
