The African Union Chairperson urges Somalia to exercise maximum restraint

Addis Ababa 31 December : .Moussa Faki Mahmat, Chairperson of African Union Commission (AU), expressed concern about the political tensions in Somalia.
According to an AU statement, the Chairperson of Pan-African Bloc “follows with deep concern” the current political tensions in Somalia.

According to Xinhua, Mahamat called for utmost control and emphasized for continuing engagements with the Prime Minister and President of the country in order to reach a political resolution to this current situation.

He said that the African Union had recommitted to increase its support for Somalia’s durable peace and stability.

The Somali President Mohamed Farmajo suspended Mohamed Roble, Prime Minister of Somalia, Monday amid rising political tensions.He was accused of corruption.

Roble was accused by Farmajo of corruption and misuse public lands.

This statement came just a day after Farmajo had accused Roble, who he said that he did not manage to lead the election process to its successful conclusion.

Analysts believe that the political divide between these two leaders could delay the conclusion of the election process, which is scheduled to be completed by 2022.

After only 24 of the 275 legislators were elected, Parliamentary Elections that began November 1, have been temporarily suspended.

According to the country’s electoral body, December 24 was the deadline for the conclusion of the parliamentary election.
