A0ddis Ababba (Nov 27) : The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged African health officials to intensify Covid-19 prevention efforts in the wake of the emergence a new variant. After the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases announced that a new variant of the SARS COV-2 virus, which causes the Covid-19 pandemic, had been detected, the Africa CDC made the call.
It was deemed a “Variant Of Concern” by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
“National health authorities across Africa should strengthen public health and social measures, accelerate immunisation, prioritising high-risk groups ahead of upcoming Covid-19 epidemics,” Africa CDC agency stated in a statement.
It urged African countries to accelerate the Covid-19 vaccination drive in order to stop the spread of the virus.
According to Xinhua news agency, the agency stressed the importance of timely genomic surveillance through coordination and collaboration with national and regional pathogen genomics labs.
According to the agency, the number confirmed Covid-19 cases in Africa reached 8,616,912 with 2,22,301 deaths and 8,064,499 recovery.
