Actress Shoba Narayan details idea behind ‘DDLJ’ broadway musical

Mumbai 5 August : The musical on Broadway adaptation of the cult film ‘Dilwale, Dulhania, Le Jayenge’, titled “Come to Fall in Love is a musical that aims to bring people together in an increasingly divided and toxic world.It highlights diversity and inclusion in the leading actress Shoba Narayan’s perspective.
Shoba as she played the character of the teen Alex Parrish (a role essayed by Priyanka Chopra as an adult) in the American thriller-drama series ‘Quantico’, will be seen in the character of Simran (played by Kajol in the film) in the musical.

In describing the concept of the broadway musical the actress stated, “‘Come Fall in Love is a stunning tale of unifying people from all kinds of life.In light of the stale story of the divisions that have been running in our society”Come Fall in Love is a deeply moving and relevant musical that examines the importance of inclusiveness and the need to learn about a world that is not the one we live in.”

She also explains how just one glance at the rehearsal space makes her heart swell with happiness “As I walk around the rehearsal area I see people of every department from East to West, putting their whole themselves into this piece and attempting to be authentically representing the world we’re portraying.”

She is “thrilled” about the opportunity to bring this timeless love story to Broadway and also to be in the leading part.

The production will be the first of the work of an Indian director in the world of Broadway.

Aditya Chopra director of the 1995 Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer classic took the reins of the Broadway adaptation too.It’s the first Bollywood musical to premiere on Broadway.

“The possibility of having an Indian musical set to go to Broadway is deeply personal and significant for me, an Indian American actor who grew as a child surrounded by Bollywood musicals and movies.It was just the matter of minutes before Broadway and Bollywood met and I am thrilled to be the conductor of this incredible show”, Shobha added.

Duo of composers Vishal and Sheykhar will also be launching as composers for the medium.

Shruti Merchant will perform her debut Broadway musical in the role of Associate Choreographer.

The musical will include 18 original English songs.The creators reveal that they have a gorgeous song ‘Love In Every Color’ which highlights the theme of inclusion throughout the production.

Vishal and Sheykhar expressed in an announcement, “We are extremely proud that one of the most beloved Indian films, ‘Dilwale, Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is being made to the stage musical ‘Come Fall in Love at The Old Globe San Diego, with all our sights focused on Broadway.It is the first time that an Indian film is adapting to Broadway by the original director himself.”

“This is, therefore, the first time that India our music, culture, our dance and our amazing spirit of generosity is being shown worldwide in this manner, by and by artists and creators from India as well with the renowned veteran performers of Broadway Musical Theatre” They added.

Austin Colby, who plays the role of an American boy Roger who is in with with Simran, in the musical adaptation declared, “After watching DDLJ, I was overwhelmed with happiness, as I walked through the world of richness of Indian cultural traditions.It’s overwhelming to fully consider the impact that DDLJ has had on Indian and international viewers that has touched hearts and changed lives.”

Aditya Chopra is the director of a cast of thirty actors.They include Shoba Narayan in the role of Simran, Austin Colby as Rog Mandel, Irvine Iqbal as Baldev, Rupal Pujara as Lajjo, Vishal Vaidya as Ajit and Siddharth Menon as Kuljt.

In the case of The Old Globe run, the musical starts performances from beginning on September 1 and running through October 16 with the official Opening on Wednesday September 14.
