Thiruvananthapuram Dec 5 : .The spontaneous wit and charisma of actor Sreenivasan is what makes him a popular face in theatres throughout Kerala.
He now has a new passion for organic farming. Sreenivasan is also a highly sought-after scriptwriter and director in the Malayalam film industry.
He opened a farm called ‘Sreeni Farms’ to empower farmers in Ernakulam.Along with Stajan V.J., the actor.The actor and Stajan V.J.are supporting farmers with organic fertilisers as well as buyback for the products they cultivate.
After cultivating organic paddy products successfully, the duo and their friend Khalifa opened a farm in Chekadi, a tribal village in Wayanad.
Sreenivasan, speaking to IANS, stated that the idea was to provide some tasty and indigenous paddy seedlings such as ‘Kalladiyaran’.This was about to disappear if it wasn’t for the M.S.The seeds have been preserved by Swaminathan Foundation, Wayanad.
The actor-director stated that Wayanad was home to more than 100 paddy seeds, but that 90 of these were in danger of disappearing.A few organic farmers and the M.S.have managed to preserve around 10 varieties.Swaminathan Foundation.
Sreenivasan’s farm venture has support from all over the state.Manju Warrier, actress, was present during paddy harvest at Ernakulam in Sreeni Farms.
Sukumaran, a Wayanad farmer, said to IANS that Sreenivasan’s initiative has given a boost to indigenous farming.
This will help preserve rare varieties of rice, which would have vanished from the earth’s surface.
