Sudhir Kumar Jain (IIT-GN Director) has been named Vice Chancellor at the Banaras Hindu University.

Interview excerpts:

Q.Q.How can IIT Gandhinagar’s research and innovation make everyday life more simple and convenient for people?

A.Our IIT team discovered J54, a novel molecule that can completely shrink prostate cancer tumours in as little as 50 days.A PhD student and her supervisor developed an affordable, non-electric water purification system that can eliminate more than 99% of the bacteria.

This system can prove to be extremely useful in areas with limited water supply, such as those that are underdeveloped or remote.A Virtual Reality (VR-based treadmill exercise platform) was also developed by another team of researchers to reduce the danger of serious injuries from overexercising.

Q.Q.

A.BHU is a remarkable institution with a rich legacy and renowned reputation.

Working with colleagues and students to propel BHU into the top tiers of world-class universities is what I look forward to.BHU has a large alumni network and many well-wishers.I hope to work with them and be a partner in their advancement and revitalization.

Q.Q.

A.C-DAC is our partner in the installation of the 650TF Super Computing Systems at the Institute. This will be part of the National Supercomputing Mission.

Q.Q.

A.A.Testing the coating against coronavirus is currently underway. It is protected for several days after a one-time application.

A “COVID-19 Dashboard”, developed by another team, can be used to help contain community infections.A second team created an Artificial Intelligence-based Deep Learning tool to detect Covid-19 in Chest Xray Images.

This can be used as a quick diagnostic before undergoing a medical exam.

Q.Q.

A.A.Eighty five percent of our faculty have received their degrees or postdoctoral experiences from abroad.More than 40% of undergraduate students studied abroad.Nearly 14% of IIT-GN’s PhD advisors are outside of the discipline.13 percent of research publications contain interdisciplinary authors.Nearly 21% of our projects include multidisciplinary PIs.

Q.Q.How did lockdown and corona affect the functioning of the institute

A.A.We implemented strict safety procedures and nearly all members of the community are now fully vaccinated. The majority of our students have returned to campus.

In January, we will be moving to full-time in-person learning.

Q.Q.

A.A.It is revolutionary because it is an efficient fuel and can carry more payloads/satellites to orbit.

Our students often choose entrepreneurship, starting startups as early as their career in areas like 3D concrete printing technology and Ground Penetrating Radar technology (GPR), FinTech and fibre-optic sensors technology.IIT Gandhinagar Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre, (IIEC), is an incubator that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship as well as technology commercialisation.

Q.Q.

A.A.IITGN’s academic life is interwoven with internationalization. At any given point, between 10 and 15% of IITGN’s faculty are visiting faculty from overseas.
