Popular actor Sukanya has been awarded Rs 10 lakh by a Chennai court, as compensation for derogatory remarks against her.A Chennai Fast Track Court (FTC) has directed popular network Sun TV to pay up Rs.10 lakh as compensation to Sukanya in a case of defamation filed by the latter.
The defamation case dates back to 18 years when popular Tamil weekly Nakkeeran carried out an interview of the slain sandalwood poacher Veerappan.
The interview was also video-taped and was broadcast on April 17th in 1996 in a reality show Nerukku Ner on Sun TV.
In the interview telecast on April 7, 1996 by Sun TV, Veerappan had made derogatory remarks against Sukanya.During that time she approached the court.The actress had filed a case before the Madras High Court, seeking a direction to Sun TV, editor of “Nakkeeran,” Nakkeeran Gopal, and Veerappan to pay damages of Rs 10,00,500.
The case, after pending in court for more than 15 years, picked up momentum in 2013.Sukanya attended most of the proceedings and insisted that the TV channel and magazine compensate her.
The case came to an end today when judge P Chandrasekaran directed Sun TV to pay Rs 10,00,500 to Sukanya.The actress will next appear as Mahesh Mother in Srimanthudu film.
