Kolkata 2 Sep : More than five hours have been passed since the Enforcement Directorate (ED) began asking questions about Trinamool Congress national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the coal smuggling fraud on Friday.Sources have said that the ED investigators have found several of contradictory statements made by him.ED sources claimed that the questioning began around 11 am.At 2 pm Abhishek Banerjee who is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was given an unannounced lunch break of 45 minutes.
“During breaks, officers compared the assertions that were made by Abhishek Banerjee on Friday with his previous statements to the ED in two previous questions. The officers identified several of contradictions between the statements made by Banerjee today and the ones he that he made in the past,” an ED official said.
After lunch after lunch, a new round of questions was initiated, and continued until the time of filing of the report. It has been learned that the Friday’s questioning is connected to specific transactions in accounts in banks believed to be owned by Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Narula Banerjee, and his mother-in-law Maneka Gambhir.
In addition the ED is expected to question Maneka Gambhir on 5 September.
A comment that was made by Bengal BJP President Sukanta Magumdar has led to speculation of potential tough actions from the ED against Abhishek Banerjee on the same day.
“Something important could occur today.Keep an eye out.Now I am convinced I’m sure that Congress as well as CPI(M) officials will be able to swallow their own claims that BJP as well as Trinamool Congress are in an agreement over this investigation,” Majumdar said.
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that such comments from Majumdar are an indication that the central authorities are doing what is they are envisioned by the BJP or the saffron’s leaders are well-aware in the lead of the next actions of the authorities.
“How do he be able to make such a statement,” Ghosh asked.
