The legislation was sent to the panel shortly after it was presented in the Lok Sabha on August 8.

The panel of the Parliamentary committee on energy is led by JD(U) MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh.

Power sector stakeholders such as the representatives of distribution companies and the power engineers’ union as well officials of the Power Ministry and even representatives of the farmers’ association will likely to be brought to the panel after the time of the panel meeting has been announced by sources.

According to reports the panel could be meeting later in the month to debate the bill which aims to ease the use of distribution networks for any entity that obtains a distribution license. This would let consumers select the options of any power company among the various companies operating in the same region as consumers do with the option of choosing mobile networks.

The sources also stated that the consensus of all members of the panel of Parliamentarians is required to convene the meeting to discuss the bill.

The opposition parties, led by Congress and the associations of farmers have been complaining that wealthy consumers will prefer private distributors at the cost of the state-owned distributors.

They also have claimed that the changes in the law will allow private firms to choose distribution networks that are profitable.

Farmers have been arguing against the Electricity Amendment Bill, saying that electricity is a vital commodity that requires proper regulation and the control of private distribution firms could cause harm to the industry.

On the 8th of August shortly after the introduction of the Electricity Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha the Union Power Minister R.K.Singh had informed the House that the bill was sent to the Parliamentary panel.
