The top Kamtapur Liberation Movement leader gives up in Kolkata

Kolkata 18 August : In a significant change, Kailash Koch, the general secretary of the underground separatist group Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) surrendered to the West Bengal police together with his wife and son on Thursday.
Koch was arrested at the West Bengal police headquarters in Kolkata and surrendered to DGP Manoj Malviya, laying down his AK-47 rifle in front of him.

“This is a wonderful day.Koch was a prominent participant of the Kamtapur liberation movement.He has surrendered in a voluntary manner together with his wife.He has also surrendered his AK-47 rifle.” Malviya said.

KLO is a separatist organization which is working towards the creation of an independent Kamtapur state that is forked out of various districts in the northern region of West Bengal, Assam and Bihar and even Jhapa district of Bhutan.

Speaking to media, Koch said he decided to renounce to the government because of the appeal to inspire of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“I am extremely impressed by the development efforts carried out by her (Banerjee’s) government for the people of the proposed Kamtapur region in West Bengal.

I would like to return to the mainstream, and that’s why I decided to give up my rights together with my wife,” he said.

Koch also stated that, after having walked the path of the armed revolution for so many years he realized that the armed revolution is not an option.

“So I appeal to all the other KLO activists of KLO to lay down their arms and join the main stream,” he said.

Koch added that Koch added that KLO activists will be able to surrender their arms in the next few days.

The latest development is viewed as an important negative for the KLO movement in West Bengal, especially in a period when KLO leader Jeevan Singh, in an unconfirmed video message, from an unidentified source threatened of bloodbath when the Chief Minister Banerjee ever takes a step in the planned Kamtapur region in north Bengal.
