Government develops facial recognition technology to identify antisocial members with masks on

New Delhi, Aug 18 : The Indian government has created facial recognition technology that can detect criminals with or without disguises, with face masks or monkey caps even in low-resolution images in restricted zones and public spaces.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD), in its latest report entitled “AI in Defence”, disclosed the Face Recognition System in Disguise (FRSD) as well with other AI-based systems mostly designed to aid the Indian Army.

“Face recognition in the wild’ in feeds from surveillance cameras is a challenging problem to solve due to the poor resolution of the images that are captured by the cameras.

This issue becomes even more difficult to resolve with the complexity of different facial disguises as well as crowd occlusions as well as varying lighting.

As per the MoD report According to the MoD report, the FRSD algorithm was developed in the way that the system for face recognition can discern different disguises such as face-masks, beards moustache, wigs, sunglasses, head-scarves, caps and hats, etc.

In addition to the disguises, the system also considers various lighting conditions, shadows that fall on faces as well as crowd occlusions.

“The system is placed in secure zones that are restricted for the purposes of live surveillance. It could also be used in public spaces to detect criminals, as in the report.

The algorithm is also employed by security agencies to perform thorough face search across huge repository.

This system was designed to guarantee an scalable system over many GPUs (GPUs) as well as servers.

Additionally the system is designed to maximize the use of GPUs, and can handle multiple cameras with one GPU.

The system is equipped with an incredibly flexible video analytics system with several of additional surveillance tools, such as geo-fencing and people counting fire detection, collision detection, according to the report.

Another AI-based system called The seeker system is an autonomous facial recognition surveillance, monitoring and analysis system to identify and monitoring of threats to counterterrorism continuous surveillance as well as monitoring of the areas that are disturbed.

In addition, the system can be utilized to ensure state-of-the-art security of vital military or civil establishments, as well as monitoring of border crossing points.

“The AI-powered analytics module facilitates the processing of Intelligence information from a variety of sources to track and identify movements of terrorists and other anti-national elements with precise information gathering,” said the MoD report.

The Defense industry has taken steps in changing the military to one of the most modernized in the world.

The development of autonomy in weapons systems, in ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) and data management can be a major benefit in stopping terrorism by implementing security measures to counter terrorism, and protecting soldiers.

“In actual fact, AI in defence can alter conflict and combat at the most fundamental level,” the report said.
