WHO provides new names for variations of monkeypox virus

Geneva 13 August, Geneva : Geneva, Aug 13 : World Health Organisation (WHO) has released new names for the variants of the virus monkeypox in the process of being in circulation.This is to prevent any social or cultural offence the WHO stated in an announcement.
A group of experts from all over the world gathered by the WHO came up with the names to be used, Xinhua news agency reported.

Experts now refer to the earlier Congo Basin clade (group of variants) in Central Africa as Clade I and the previous West African clade as Clade II.The latter is comprised of two sub-clades: Clade IIa and Clade IIb, of which Clade IIb was the primary group of variants that circulated throughout the 2022 epidemic.

The world health agency also stated that the names of the clades must be implemented immediately.

Newly-discovered viruses or related diseases, as well as virus variants must be named in a way that are not likely to cause inflicting offence on any social, cultural or regional, national ethnic or professional groups and that limit any adverse impact on travel, trade or tourism, or animal welfare, WHO said.

The virus monkeypox was identified at the time it was identified in 1958.

It was first identified as a major variant through the geographical regions in which they were believed to be circulating.

WHO officially announced in late July that the monkeypox outbreak was now an epidemic of global health crisis of global concern.

According to the WHO’s status report on the monkeypox epidemic, published this week, there have been confirmed cases of the disease in 2784 labs, and 11 deaths caused by the disease in more than 89 countries and regions across the globe, with Europe and the Americas being the most affected.
