Geneva 13 Aug, Geneva : An estimated number of the 168 humanitarian workers who have been targeted in the first half of this year, resulting in 44 deaths, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in Geneva.
OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke told a press briefing on Friday that, according to information from the non-governmental organization Humanitarian Outcomes, a partner of OCHA more than 140 humanitarian workers were killed in the line of duty in 2021, which is the highest number of deaths since 2013.

In 2021, there were injured 203 aid workers, and 117 abducted, Laerke said.

According to an OCHA spokesperson, South Sudan, Afghanistan and Syria remain the most violent aid workers’ destinations, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Most of the over 140 deaths in 2021 were killed by small guns in shooting incidents with the second most common reason of death being shelling and air strikes the majority of the victims in Syria,” he added.

The announcement also mentioned that this Friday is World Humanitarian Day, Laerke also announced the start of the campaign for this year and a public appeal to show support for the dedication, work and self-sacrificing that human rights activists from all over the world show every day.

Beginning today he stated that the public is encouraged to join the hashtag on social media to post, like, share and encourage the posts by OCHA as well as other organizations and to make use of every opportunity to show support with those in need and to show appreciation to those who provide aid.

World Humanitarian Day takes place every year on the 19th of August It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2003 attack of the UN headquarters in Baghdad which killed 22 aid workers.
