On Sunday night, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced in separate statements that a ceasefire was reached, he stated, noting that a ceasefire is in place to date, Xinhua news agency reported.

The envoy praised the vital importance of Egypt in making sure that the cease-fire was in place in conjunction with the United Nations, as well as the support of other parties in the process, the UN envoy stated that the slowing down of the situation prevented the onset of an all-out war.It also allowed the distribution of the much-needed humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza beginning later on Monday.

However, he stressed that the most recent flare-up was rooted in tensions that were deeper.

“I would like to inform the Council aware of the following that the ceasefire is in danger.Any return of combat will result in disastrous implications for Palestinians and Israelis and render any political progress difficult,” he said in his briefing to the Security Council.

Wennesland repeated calls to the Israeli as well as Palestinian leadership as well with the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to reopen serious negotiations in the direction of an acceptable two-state solution.

“Ultimately the main drivers of these and other escalations remain.

The cycles of violence will cease when we reach a political solution of the conflict that puts an end to occupation as well as the realization of the two-state solution, based on of the lines of 1967, in accordance with UN resolutions and international law, as well as prior accords,” he added.
