Hazardous To Health? Fears About 5g Risks May Be Overstated

Risky to health? Concerns over the health risks associated with 5G may be exaggerated.

New Delhi, Aug 7 : Even as India is scheduled to become the first country to provide 5G in its own country experts on Friday, they debated about the link between the technology of 5G with potential health dangers.
5G, also known as the fifth generation, is the most recent mobile phone technology wireless that was first widely used in 2019.It increases the capabilities of 4G.

Alongside faster connectivity speeds it also offers new uses in entertainment, gaming and gaming because of the high speed and low latency. Also, it is anticipated to improve performance and provide a variety of innovative applications such as the development of the eHealth (telemedicine remote surveillance and the telesurgery).

5G operates by producing an kind of energy known as electromagnetic radiation. It has higher frequencies than the previous wireless networks, which makes it faster and more efficient.

Electromagnetic frequencies, such as those generated by 5G produce an area referred to as an electromagnetic field (EMF) that according to some studies, can have negative consequences for human health.

While research on the frequencies utilized in 5G is not extensive research has shown health impacts of electromagnetic fields in all directions. However the results aren’t consistent.

“Though there isn’t any evidence of the risk that is related with 5G or 4G is a possibility that exposure to radio magnetic waves could increase the risk of cancer in various areas of the body. When people talk, they keep their smartphones closer to their brains therefore, there are greater chances of brain cancer in those who are affected,” Dr.Col.Vijay Dutta Sr.Consultant in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre told IANS.

“The radio-frequency magnetic waves could also disrupt the rhythm of the heart.

People who wear pacemakers are more at risk. The closer one gets close to the towers, the more risk they face.

The technology is beneficial in terms of communication, however it is is harmful for humans’ health,” he added.

However as per the World Health Organization, “to the present, and following a lot of study there is no adverse health result has been found to be in any way connected with exposure to wireless technology”.

The WHO stated that heating of the tissues is the primary mechanism of interplay between radio frequency fields with the human body. The levels of exposure to radio frequency fields generated by current technologies result in minimal temperature increase in the human body.

When the frequency rises it is less absorbed into the tissues of the body, and the absorption of the energy is concentrated to the exterior of the body (skin and eyes). As long as the overall exposure remains within the limits of standards set by the international community, no negative effects for the public health are expected according to the world health body stated.

“India isn’t the first country to introduce 5G.More than 50 countries have deployed the technology prior to us.In addition, a majority of these countries, including the US, Korea, Japan, UK launched 5G years ago.If there were any concerns or any real health risks that were affecting people who use 5G, we would have seen the cases of those happening in the past,” Charu Paliwal, Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research, told IANS.

“I believe that at the moment we need to be worried about any health dangers. There aren’t any studies that can confirm these assertions,” she added.

With India going through a digital transformation, 5G will drive growth in areas such as education, agriculture robots, healthcare and many more according to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

The trade body earlier this year also stated that any concerns about the negative impact of 5G’s technology on health is “totally wrong”.

The evidence available suggests that the latest technology is safe.

The auction for 5G spectrum, which was massive which concluded on August 1st, saw record bids totalling over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in 40 rounds that lasted for seven days.

The Mukesh Ambani-led Jio was the highest bidder in the auction of 5G spectrum in India and won 24,740 MHz spectrum for Rs 88,078 crore.

Jio was followed by Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel with 19,867 MHz spectrum in different bands worth 43,084 crore.

Vodafone Idea, at third spot, was awarded 2,668 MHz worth of Rs 18,784 crore.

A company of the Adani Group acquired 400 MHz spectrum in 26 GHz band for around 212 crore rupees.
