New Delhi, Aug 6 : Twitter has fixed an issue with security that allowed access to the data of at least 54 lakh accounts, which were sold via the Dark Web.
Twitter said that if users run an anonymous Twitter account, “we understand the risks an incident like this could create and we deeply regret that this has happened”.

“To protect your identity and keep it as private as you can, we suggest not adding a public email address or phone number to your account on Twitter,” the company said in an update at the end of Friday.

The company claimed that although no passwords were disclosed, “we encourage everyone who uses Twitter to activate two-factor authentication using authentication software or physical security keys in order to guard your account from unauthorised logins”.

The vulnerability permitted malicious users to enter a telephone number or email address in the login process in the hope of finding whether the information was linked to an existing Twitter account and, if it was the account it was.

“We consider our obligation to safeguard your privacy seriously, and it’s unfortunate that this has happened,” said Twitter.

Twitter in January was notified of a notification through the bug bounty program of an issue in its system.

“As the consequence of this vulnerability, if a user submitted an email address or telephone number to Twitter’s system, Twitter’s system will inform the user of which Twitter account the email address or number was linked with in the event that it was associated with there was one,” said the company.

In July, Twitter learned that someone could have benefited from the (bug) and had offered to buy the data they had collected.

“After having a look at an example of the data available to be sold, we discovered that a criminal was taking advantage of the problem before it was dealt with,” said Twitter.

The company directly informed the owners of accounts that were affected by the issue.
