Kabul 6 Aug : At at least eight civilians have been killed in an explosion in an area that is predominantly Shia in the western part of Kabul, Taliban authorities have declared. A further 18 were wounded when explosive devices that were placed in a cart were detonated on Friday, the dpa news agency reported according to a statement from the police’s spokesperson Khalid Zadran.
A few of the injured were in critical health, Zadran added.
The attack happened at a time when Shia Muslims, a religious minority in the country were getting ready for Ashura which is a celebration of the death of Imam Hussein, the great-grandson of the prophet Muhammad.
The Islamic State (IS) militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a post on the official channel for telegram the group claimed that they targeted a group of Shia Muslims.
Following the Taliban control of Afghanistan in the month of August of last year, IS has carried out several of fatal attacks, mostly targeting religious minorities.
