Western officials have raised the alarm about Russia’s actions on the ground, BBC reported.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is situated in the south-east of Ukraine along the eastern bank of the Dnipro river.

It is currently managed by Ukrainian employees under Russian supervision. It is made up of six water reactors pressurised and houses radioactive waste.

In the daily update on intelligence The UK defense ministry claimed that Russia was making use of the region to launch attacks, profiting of the “protected status” of the nuclear power plant to lessen the chance of attacks overnight from Ukrainian troops, BBC reported.

The director of the nuclear agency of the United Nations, Rafael Grossi, warned this week that the facility was “completely out of control”.

Any accident that occurs at the power plant could have devastating consequences.

Ukraine has previously claimed it has been reported that Russian forces have deployed troops and are in the process of storing weapons on the grounds of the power station.

“Every morning, we get up to see that they’ve hit only homes that are residential,” a local businessman told the BBC.
