United Nations, New York : , December 28 : UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for international solidarity in order to end the spread of infectious diseases. Guterres stated in a video message to the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness on December 27 that global solidarity “gives every country a fighting opportunity to stop epidemic diseases from their tracks.”
Covid-19 is proving how fast “an infectious disease can sweep the globe,” the UN Chief said.This pushes health systems to their limits and disrupts daily life for everyone.
He said, “It also showed our failure to learn from recent health emergencies such as SARS, Zika and Ebola, avian flu, Zika, Zika, Ebola, and other.”
He said, “And it reminded me that the world is woefully inept to prevent localised epidemics from spreading across borders and spiraling into global pandemics.”
Guterres stated that infectious diseases are still a danger for every country and that Covid-19 wouldn’t be the end of pandemics, Xinhua reported.
While the world is responding to the health crisis in the present, the Pope emphasized the importance of preparing for the next.
He stated that this meant increasing investments in monitoring and early detection, as well as rapid response plans for all countries — particularly the most vulnerable.
