New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : .The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met Wednesday to discuss the situation following the tragic IAF chopper crash in Tamil Nadu.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rohat, his wife, and 11 others were killed in the accident.
The meeting concluded that the government would announce national mourning on Thursday as a sign of respect.

The meeting was attended by Rajnath Singh (Defence Minister), Amit Shah (Home Minister), and top military, intelligence, and security officers.The next Chief of Defence Staff was also discussed.

Rajnath Singh had previously spoken to Modi before the meeting about the crash.He also asked Vivek Ram Chaudhari, chief of Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal, to rush to the accident scene.

Singh visited Rawat’s residence in Delhi, and spoke to his daughter.General M.M., Chief of Army Staff, had earlier briefed Singh about the crash.Naravane had previously briefed Singh on the crash and related issues.

On Wednesday, General Rawat and his spouse were among 13 people who died when the Mi17V5 helicopter in which they were traveling crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.

“With deep regret, it is now established that General Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat, and 11 other passengers have died in this unfortunate incident,” said the Indian Air Force in a statement.

General Rawat was on his route to Wellington in Nilgiri Hills, Defence Services Staff College, to address the faculty members and student officers of this staff course.

The only survivor of the 14 aboard was Group Captain Varun Sing, Directing Staff at Defence Services Staff College.He is currently being treated at the Military Hospital in Wellington.

Madhulika Rawat, Brigadier L.S.General Rawat was accompanied by Lidder, Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Sing, Naik Gursewak, Naik Jitender Singh, Naik Vivek, Naik Bhai Teja, and Naik Harjinder Kumar.

They were joined by two other pilots, a group captain, and a gunner on board the ill-fated helicopter.

Singh, his wife, and seven staff boarded a flight from Delhi to the Sulur IAF base in Coimbatore at 8.47.They landed at Sulur at 11 :34 AM.They boarded the Mi17V5 helicopter at 11 :48.The Air Traffic Control (ATC), which was located in Coonoor, lost contact with the helicopter at 12:22.

According to the IAF, a Court of Inquiry was ordered into the accident.

The report is expected within one month.

All the mortal remains of all the deceased will be brought to Delhi on Thursday.
