Lok Sabha approves Bill amending the service conditions and salary of higher judiciary judges

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2018 : .The Lok Sabha passed the High Court and Supreme Court Judges’ (Salaries and Conditions of Service), Amendment Bill, 2021.

This amends the salaries and conditions of service for judges of the higher judiciary and provides an additional quantum of pension and family pension to those who reach a certain age according to a specific scale.
The Bill provides that the additional quantum of pension for retired judges of the High Courts or the Supreme Court will be sanctioned upon reaching the age of 80, 85 and 90 years respectively.

Law Minister Kiren Riju replied to the debate about this Bill.He said he was grateful for the suggestions made during Tuesday’s debate and that he would consider including them after consulting with other stakeholders.

He also stated that he could not guarantee the Members that they would add up certain suggestions without consulting with the Supreme Court or High Courts.

The Minister noted that the judiciary is as important as the other pillars in democracy, as the legislature and executive.

He also stated that many retired judges and Supreme Court Bar Association had different views on the Collegium system, and the National Judicial Appointment Committee.Therefore, he will be conducting a wider consultation.

He also acknowledged that the overwhelming number of cases pending in different courts must be dealt with on a priority basis.

Congressman Shashi Tharoor, who initiated the discussion on Tuesday’s Bill, raised the issue about the retirement age for judges of the highest courts.

He also mentioned the alarmingly high number of cases pending in the courts.

Kalyan Banerjee, Trinamool Congress’ Kalyan, raised the issue about case pendency.BJP’s P.P.Chaudhary asked the government to reconsider the process of appointing judges.
