Ashes, 1st test: Cummins rotated both his bowlers well and himself well, says Hussain

Brisbane, Dec 8, 2008 : Former England captain Nasser Hassain stated that Australia captain Pat Cummins did a good job in rotating the bowlers on Wednesday’s first Ashes Test at The Gabba.
He said that losing the toss was Cummins’ best decision, as he and England captain Joe Root wanted him to bat first.

Australia’s loss of the toss was a blessing in disguise as Cummins scored five wickets to beat England for 147 runs in 50.1 overs.

“What a dramatic start! 147 runs was perfect for Australia. The perfect day was provided by the rain, which meant that they didn’t want to bat for more than half an hour.

It couldn’t have been better for Australia with Pat Cummins, Australia’s new captain, scoring five runs.Joe Root was out for a duck.

Hussain, Sky Sports’s correspondent, wrote that Cummins had done a good job of rotating his bowlers and he did a great job of rotating himself.

Hussain commented on the outcome of the toss and said, “I think the worst thing Cummins did is lose the toss because both batsmen were going to bat.” Root did bat, and it was a good toss to win.Root’s toss was more difficult than mine in 2002.It was a terrible decision.I believe they had been in drought for six months in Brisbane.I found some moisture in the pitch and had a bowl.Australia was 364-2 at the end.
It was a green pitch and it had been raining. While everyone focuses on the pitch’s performance on the first day, captains must think about what the pitch looks like on days three, four, and five.

The pitch tends to get faster due to the humidity, cracks and the speed of the pitch. You need to think ahead.

Evidently, 147 all the way tells you that it was the wrong decision based on the way it bounced around and seamed around.Sometimes you can confuse it all.

The 53-year old pointed out that Root’s duck loss was a crucial moment of the match.Root was the biggest wicket, not only because he is England’s best player but also because of his impact throughout the series.

Root has had a difficult Ashes series and has struggled against Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and others so he would have wanted to get the series under control. These mind games are just the beginning.

Hazlewood or Cummins will be there to bowl whenever he bats.

He concluded by stating that Mitchell Starc, left-arm pacer, had exploited the nervousness of opener Rory Burns and exaggerated shuffling to clean him up first ball.

“Rory Burns was feeling pressure. He has been out six times this year for a duck, which suggests that he is a nervous starter.

His worst technical failure is when you’re nervous. His front foot crosses over to the off-side a bit too often.Starc’s foot was clearly visible if you freeze it.Starc said that Australia had completed their preparation and knew straight and true how to get to Burns.”
