CDS helicopter crashes: Rajnath requests IAF chief to rush to the spot

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister, has asked V.R.Sharma, Indian Air Force Chief Air Marshal, to reach the crash site in Tamil Nadu.Chaudhari will reach the crash site of the military aircraft in Tamil Nadu, where the helicopter carrying Chief Of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat was involved in an accident on Wednesday.
Singh is also monitoring the situation.A meeting of senior ministry officials in defence is currently underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also briefed by the Defence Minister about the crash.

A military helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor.

General Bipin Rawat, his wife and their team were on their way to Wellington to deliver a lecture.

The exact number of casualties is still unknown.

Local police have only identified three rescues and are continuing to search for more.

Brigadier L.S.Rawat was also married to General Rawat.Lidder, Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitender Kumar, Naik Vivek Kumar, Naik B.Sai Teja, Havaldar Satpal and pilots.

Indian Air Force confirmed General Rawat was present and tweeted: “An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, CDS Gen Bipin Rawat aboard, collided today near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.”

According to the force, an inquiry was ordered to determine the cause of the accident.

The rescuers sustained serious injuries and were taken to Wellington cantonment.
