SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship – Indian football team departs for Dhaka

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : The India U-19 Women’s Football Team left Dhaka on Wednesday to compete in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship.Their opening fixture is scheduled for December 13 against Sri Lanka.
The girls had been training in Goa, and Alex Ambrose, their head coach, believes that the camp will aid them in adapting to the new environment.Ambrose said that the girls had been training in Goa and were adapting to all the circumstances.

“It’s a difficult time for everyone around the world, but we got the chance to train and play, which I am grateful for.Ambrose added that we want to succeed and that the federation supports us so that our expectations can be met.

The U-19 team is relatively new and has a few players who have been part of the national team fold.Ambrose believes that the SAFF tournament will help girls understand the international level of football.

“It’s a brand new team and everyone is excited about playing a good game of football.They will be able to adapt and learn more about International football by playing in competitive teams.

Ambrose stated that players must believe in themselves and play well.

“It will help girls prepare themselves for tough situations.

We are here to play great football, so expectations are not unreasonable.The players are not under any pressure.

He stated that they just want the players to enjoy their football and win a championship.

India will face Bhutan on December 15th, followed by Bangladesh (December 17th) and Nepal (19th) in a round-robin format.

The final will be played on December 22 between the top two sides.

The squad:

Goalkeepers: Anshika, Adrija Sarkhel, Manju Ganjhu.

Defenders: Astam Oraon, Nisha, Nirmala Devi, Purnima Kumari, Shilky Devi, Ritu Devi, Kritina Devi.

Midfielders: Poonam, Nitu Linda, Babina Devi, Santosh, Priyangka Devi, Mariyammal Balamurugan, Anju.

Forwards: Karen Estrocio, Amisha Baxla, Lynda Kom Serto, Sumati Kumari, Apurna Narzary, Santhiya Nadupatti Venugadajalam.
