Nigeria confirms 3 more Omicron cases

Abuja, Dec 8, 2008 : Nigerian authorities have confirmed three additional cases of Omicron variant Covid-19.This brings the total number of cases to six in the most populous African nation.
According to Ifedayo Adetifa (head of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC), all the cases detected so far in the country were people who had traveled to South Africa in November.

Adetifa stated that the public health institution will continue to coordinate genome surveillance activities across Nigeria to sequence all positive Covid samples taken from international travelers arriving in Nigeria, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said that this includes the sequencing of positive samples taken from international travelers from October to date.

“Nevertheless, the Delta variant is still the dominant variant, and so far, there has not been any replacement of this variant with the new Omicron variant, as observed elsewhere,” the official said.

The NCDC detected three cases of Omicron variant Covid-19 in the country last week.It was the first time that the NCDC had detected the variant in west Africa.
