After a lunch break of 59/4, Cummins struck in his first over.Haseeb Hameed was caught by Steve Smith at second slip.

Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope shared a 52-run stand for sixth wicket.

But it wasn’t to last as Mitchell Starc cramped Buttler’s space, forcing him to nick to Alex Carey.

Three overs later, Pope was out, top-edging to fine, giving Cameron Green his first Test wicket.

Cummins quickly took over England’s tail and wrapped up a poor batting effort by the tourists.

Australia won the first session of the match earlier, after England chose to bat first.

Starc struck with his first delivery, clean-bowling Rory Burns around the legs.

Josh Hazlewood brought more misery to England, drawing edges off Joe Root and Dawid Malan’s bats, and was caught by Carey at the first slip.

Ben Stokes, who was playing his first competitive cricket match since July 7, fended off a rising delivery by Cummins to Marnus Laboruschagne at the third slip.

Pope and Hameed helped England to safety until lunch, but they couldn’t continue as Pope and Hameed kept them under 150.

Brief scores: England scored 147 runs in 50.1 innings (Jos Buttler 39 and Ollie Pope 35; Pat Cummins 5/38; Mitchell Starc 2/35) vs Australia
