Ompodi Prasad, a party member, was attacked at the headquarters of the AIADMK on Friday after he asked for a nomination form for the position of Coordinator.

According to party election officials, other people also came for filing nominations but they weren’t qualified because they didn’t have the required 15 proposers, 15 seconders, and five years of continued membership.

The AIADMK Executive Committee voted to amend its election rule on December 1.This means that the election of the Coordinator and Joint Coordinator will be by primary members with a single vote.

The Executive Committee also decided to remove the powers of the Joint Coordinator and Coordinator to relax rules relating to the election process and those of the General Council to amend them.

This election rule was modified by the party’s General Council meeting on September 12, 2017, where it was decided that the coordinator and joint coordinator would be elected by Council.

KCP claims that the party didn’t have the concept of a Coordinator or Joint Coordinator at the beginning.

According to party rules, the General Secretary was to elected by primary members.

A senior leader of the party told IANS that the amendment to the election process was expected to end the power struggle between the office-bearers.

A combination of factors such as a string of electoral losses and growing dissension within party, corruption cases, raids against former ministers, among others, led to the AIADMK leadership amending the bye-laws.

A case is also pending before the Delhi High Court against former Parliamentarian KCP, who filed it against the party’s earlier amendment to its constitution to remove the right of primary members to elect its General Secretary and give it to the General Council.

KCP reports that party cadres and second-line leaders are questioning the decisions of the top leadership following a string electoral loss — Lok Sabha Assembly, Lok Sabha and local body elections.

The party surprised everyone on December 2 by announcing the election schedules for the positions of Coordinator and Joint Coordinator.

The party had set December 7 as the poll date, and the declaration of results for the next day was the next day.

The nominations will be scrutinized on December 5, and the last date to withdraw is December 6.

The by-laws of the AIADMK state that organisational elections must be held once every five years.

Former Chief Ministers Palaniswami and Paneerselvam hold the positions of party coordinator and joint coordinator.

The Madras High Court refused to stop the elections on December 3 due to a petition by KCP, an expelled former Parliamentarian.

Palanisamy claimed that the party didn’t give the required notice period for filing nominations following the announcement of the poll schedule.

KCP stated that the court had also ordered the serving of notices to Panneerselvam and Palaniswami, as well as to C.Ponnaiyan, Pollachi V.Jayaraman, election officials, and Panneerselvam.

KCP also claimed that the AIADMK failed to give the required 21-day notice prior the announcement of elections. This was in his case starting December 2, 2021.

He also petitioned for the court to appoint an ex-High Court Judge as an independent election officer to conduct the party’s election.

The AIADMK announced that the organisational elections for various posts will be held in two phases, starting on December 13 and ending on December 23.
