It used 28 years of satellite data, from 1990 to 2018, to determine that 41 percent of Kerala’s coastline is at risk of erosion. This was in response to a question from Shashi Tharoor, the Congress leader.

Rupala stated that coastal erosion has an impact on coastal communities, including fishermen. He also said that the Centrally Sponsored scheme – Blue Revolution Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries – provided financial assistance of Rs 93.84 Crore to support fishermen’s welfare-related activities, including the construction of houses for fishermen.

He said that the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yajana (PMMSY), which is being implemented from 2020-21, has also provided a sum of Rs 50.89 million to the Kerala government to support welfare-related activities, including livelihoods and nutritional support for socio-economically backward traditional fishers’ families.

The government stated that the fisheries sector plays an important part in the socio-economic development for approximately 28 million fisher-folk.It provides food and security and contributes 0.95 percent to the national GVA.

Tharoor’s question was about GDP, not GVA.He asked: “Whether the country’s fisheries sector greatly contributes to food safety by employing over 14.5 million people, contributing to 1.07 percent of the GDP, and 5.37% of the agricultural GDP.”
