Media reports: 6 killed by strong windstorms in northwest Turkey

Istanbul, December 1, 2008 : According to local media, strong windstorms have caused at least six deaths and more than 50 injuries in Turkey’s northwestern region.
Turkish TV news channel NTV reported Tuesday that four people were killed and 46 others were injured in Istanbul.

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city, with more than 16 millions inhabitants.

According to the report, bad weather also caused the deaths of two more people and injured many more in the northern provinces Zonguldak and Kocaeli.

Strong winds have caused ship damage and forced schools to close.According to Xinhua news agency, motorcyclists are having difficulty crossing the Bosphorus Strait bridges because of strong gusts.

According to a written statement from the Istanbul Governor’s Office, electric scooters and motorcycles are prohibited from the roads until 6 p.m.local (1500 GMT) Monday.

Turkish Airlines, Turkey’s national flag carrier, stated that the storm disrupted flights destined for Istanbul.
