BSF: Fenced most of India-B’desh frontiers by 2022

Agartala/Shillong 30 Nov : Indian authorities are working to complete border fencing work in most areas between the northeastern countries and Bangladesh by next-year to strengthen security along international borders, officials from the BSF said Tuesday.
Officials from the Border Security Force (BSF), on Wednesday, stated that smuggling of narcotics and cattle, as well as infiltrations, are still taking place along the India-Bangladesh border.

The security personnel have managed to control these activities to a large degree.

Susanta Kumar Nath, Inspector General of Tripura Frontier, stated that 67 km of the 856 km state border with Bangladesh remained unfenced for various reasons.

These portions will be fenced by next Year.

Four northeastern states, Tripura (856km), Meghalaya (443km), Mizoram (318km) and Assam (263km), share a 1,880-km border to Bangladesh.

According to data provided by the IPS officer the number of illegal cross-border intrusions has increased this year compared with last year.

The BSF in Tripura frontier arrested 208 intruders who attempted illegal crossing of international borders.

This includes 115 Indian Nationals and the 93 Bangladeshi, as well as the 131 intruders (85 Indians, 46 Bangladeshis) that were arrested last year.

Nath stated that contrabands and drugs worth Rs 13 crore were seized in this year’s seizure.

D.Haokip, BSF Meghalaya Frontier Principal Officer, stated in Shillong the fencing of a 72.2 km stretch in Khasi Hills region on the international border with Bangladesh in Meghalaya is still to be started due to a variety of reasons including riverine problems and land acquisition issues.

Haokip claimed that cattle smuggling in Meghalaya has been drastically reduced this year.

He said that 148 people, including 59 Bangladeshis, were apprehended for trying illegally to cross international borders in 2021.

The BSF has arrested 78 Indians along the Cachar frontier, ten Bangladeshi nationals and one person from Myanmar this year.
