He was the past chairman of the party and read the list of party office bearers on Sunday.

However, a portion of the party leaders opposed Oli’s single decision to nominate party office bearers and Central Committee members.

They demanded the elections even though they knew they would lose.

Oli agreed to run for election after strong opposition from his party leaders.2,175 of the country’s representatives voted to elect the 301 members of the new Central Committee.

According to Rajan Bhattarai, the CPN-UML leader, Oli has received 1,840 votes and Rawal has only 223 votes.

After the votes have been counted, the final announcement will be made.Oli’s camp however is ready to sweep.

Oli’s aides won the remaining office bearers’ positions, including the Central Committee.

According to insiders, even though elections were held, it is certain that Oli will win the election.

This will cement Oli’s hold on the party.

Oli, who was elected party chairman in 2016, tried to fill all the posts – one Senior Vice Chair, six Vice Presidents and one Secretary General, one Secretary General, three Secretaries General Deputy, seven Secretaries and 301 Central Committee members by consensus or without voting.

He had also proposed consensus candidates for Central Committee, but as aspirants have already filed nominations, voting will only be done in groups with more candidates/aspirants than the available positions.

Oli, who supported the nationalist plank during the 2017 elections against India, in the wake of the blockade at the Nepal-India border, won and merged his party and another communist party, Nepal Communist Party–Maoist Centre.

He became the Chairman of Nepal Communist Party.

After Oli was elected Prime Minister in 2018, relations between Oli, Pushpa Kamal Dhal, aka Prachanda, and the Maoist Center Chairman, Oli began to deteriorate.

As relations between Oli, Prachanda began to deteriorate further, many other party leaders joined the anti-Oli group and supported Prachanda.Later, a lawsuit was filed against Prachanda’s Maoist Centre and Oli’s UML by Nepal’s Supreme Court. It invalidated the merger in March 2021.

Both parties were revived as separate, older entities.

Oli was not happy with the UML leaders that supported Prachanda’s attempt to unseat him. These leaders formed the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Socialist in August.Their Chairman was Oli’s long-time aide and former Prime Minister Madhav Krishna Nepal.
