Thiruvananthapuram : , Five infants died in Attapadi, Palakkad district, from malnutrition in less than a week.This gives the Kerala political fronts an opportunity to win brownie points, play blamegame, and politicize the issue.
Despite successive governments in Kerala spending over Rs 130 crore to uplift the tribal population over the past eight years the status of their development is still poor.

The Congress-led UDF decided to send a delegation to the Attapadi tribal villages on December 6 to investigate the matter.

It blamed Vijayan for not managing the situation and asked Vijayan not to give false hope to the beleaguered.

Purandeswari, former Union Minister and general secretary of BJP, asked Vijayan where all the money that the Centre had given to the Attapadi tribal community for its upliftment, gone.He warned the state government to act quickly or they might lose their way.

Veena George, State Health Minister, stated that an investigation by the state department of health will be conducted to determine the cause of the infant deaths.

George stated that the Health and the SC/ST departments will now work together in the area to ensure that proper health and medical care facilities at the various health centers in the area are available.

Since the recent death of infants was reported, M.B., the Speaker of the Assembly has been under fire.Rajesh, who was the Lok Sabha member representing Palakkad from Palakkad until 2019, had organized a protest for tribal populations to “open the eyes of the state” and the Central governments a few years ago.

Rajesh lost 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but was defeated in the April 6 Assembly elections by V.T., a young sitting Congress legislator.Balram is from Palakkad’s Thrithala assembly constituency.

Oommen Chandy was Chief Minister between 2011 and 2016.A high-ranking delegation, led by Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Rural Development, reached Attapadi with Chandy and a large delegation of officials.

They established a task force to implement a special package for tribal development and announced that Rs 50 crores would go to the Kudumbasree Project.

The Centre and the State have given funds to Attapadi from time to time.

Whenever there is an election around the corner, political parties make a beeline for the area.After that, it grabs headlines when there are deaths.
