Brasilia, Nov 30, : Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga stated that the new coronavirus Omicron variant is a variant “concern” and not “despair,” adding that Brazil’s health system is ready for a new Covid-19 wave. Minister: “It’s not a form of despair because there are health authorities that are committed to providing quality healthcare to our population.”
After testing positive for Covid-19 in Brazil, a South African citizen was quarantined in South America.It was not known which variant of the virus caused his symptoms, according to Xinhua news agency.
The Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa, and it was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24.
The new variant contains a number previously unknown mutations, mainly in spike protein which the virus uses to invade human cell.
Queiroga asked Brazilians not to panic over the weekend.He said that the measures against the new variant of Covid-19 are the same and that vaccination is the main weapon against it.
As of Sunday, Brazil had recorded 22,080,906 Covid-19 deaths and 614,278 Covid-19 cases.
