In a message on Monday, the UN Chief stated that persistent violations of Palestinian rights and the expansion of settlements could threaten the prospects of a two-state solution.

The top UN official stated that he was “encouraged by” recent engagements between Israeli and Palestinian officials. However, he said that “continguating the situation is not sufficient.”

Guterres stated that the ultimate goal of two states living side-by-side in peace and security is still being achieved. This includes fulfilling the “legitimate nation aspirations” of both peoples, with borders based upon the 1967 lines and Jerusalem as their capital.

The Secretary General exhorted the parties not to take any measures that could undermine prospects of a peaceful solution.

He urged all parties to engage constructively in order to “end the closing” of Gaza Strip and to improve living conditions for all Palestinians under occupation.

According to Xinhua news agency, the message was sent ahead of a special meeting in New York to discuss the unresolved Palestine question and inalienable rights for the Palestinian people on Monday.

This will give the international community an opportunity to highlight the fact that the rights of the Palestinian people, as defined by the General Assembly Committee on the exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in 1975, are still not being fulfilled. They include the right of self-determination, sovereignty, national independence, sovereignty, and the right to return home and to their properties.

An exhibition dedicated to “The Question of Palestine and United Nations” was mounted at the UN headquarters in New York.

Abdulla Shahid, President, 76th session UN General Assembly, stated that the day should be observed with humility.

Since its inception, peace in the Middle East has been a priority for the UN.Despite the energy expended, numerous UN resolutions adopted and decades of negotiations, dialogues and engagements, little has been achieved.

He said that Palestinians living in Gaza enclave have “become trapped in a cycle of poverty, limited economic opportunity, unemployment, and poverty, which has also been exacerbated with Covid-19.”

Shahid praised UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and asked the global community for “sufficient and reliable financing” to ensure that Palestinian refugees receive the necessary assistance.

1977 was the year that the UN General Assembly proclaimed November 29 to be the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
