According to Xinhua news agency, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Paul Kelly advised the NSC that Omicron poses a greater threat to the Delta variant.

“The temporary pause will allow Australia to gather the information it needs to better understand Omicron variant, including its efficacy, the range and illness, including if there may be more mild symptoms and the level of transmission,” Morrison, together with cabinet ministers, stated in a joint statement.

“We will continue to take sensible, responsive and evidence-based action, guided by medical experts. This will allow us to open safely and remain open while we learn how to live with the virus.

Australia’s border was to be opened to visa holders for first time since March 2020.This would allow migrants to enter the country and reopen the lucrative international education market.

Delay in the reopening travel from South Korea and Japan has also been made until December 15.

Residents and citizens of Australia who have been fully vaccinated will still be allowed to enter the country, provided they comply with quarantine requirements in the territory or state where they arrive.

Five cases have been confirmed in Australia as of Monday.
