India was reeling at 51/5.

Ashwin and Iyer managed to weather the chaos caused by New Zealand pacers. They combined caution with aggression and collected boundaries, taking their partnership to six wickets past fifty after lunch.

Kyle Jamieson struck the second ball of his over and ended Ashwin’s gritty stay at his crease. His back of a length delivery rolled to the stumps after it bounced off his front pad.

New Zealand held on tight after Ashwin’s fall.Wriddhiman Sha took a four and six (sweep-sweep) from William Somerville in his 49th over.

Iyer, who was careful while rotating and defending the strike, ran out to smash Ajaz Ptel for a six down.He reached his half-century after batting 109 balls.

This was the first Indian bat to reach a century in the first innings, and then follow it with a half-century on debut.

Iyer continued his impressive performance by hitting two boundaries against Patel, as New Zealand’s spinners were unable to penetrate India’s spinners.

Iyer smashed the first ball through Southee’s mid-wicket.The 64-run stand was ended at the end of tea when Iyer tried to pull Southee, but the glove’s inner edge went behind Blundell.

India began the final session with Saha, Patel and Jamieson collecting boundaries each.Southee tried to replicate the Jadeja setup with Patel, but the left-hander drove down the ground as Saha glanced at him through fine leg.The duo displayed good application and continued to bat, leaving New Zealand frustrated.

Saha, who couldn’t keep wickets on day 3 due to neck stiffness was able to bring up his sixth Test half century with a brace through William Somerville.

With a straight slog over Ajaz Patel’s deep mid-wicket, Patel raised the half-century mark of the partnership.Saha and Patel had played 67 runs when declaration was taken to set an impressive total for New Zealand.

New Zealand had earlier beaten India’s batting and left the hosts at 51/5 after 19.4 overs.New Zealand were a bit loose, so Cheteshwar Pujara & Mayank Agarwal contributed 18 runs to the overnight score of 14/1.

The tourists quickly corrected themselves as Kyle Jamieson took out Pujara in the 12th over with a short ball down leg.He gloved behind keeper Tom Blundell.New Zealand reviewed the decision, which was later overturned after replays confirmed that the glove edge was correct.

Ajinkya Rahane drove Ajaz Ptel through extra cover in 15 overs.Patel got the last laugh when he caught Rahane in the wicket with a quick slider.

Shreyas and Mayank Agarwal each hit a streaky boundary until Tim Southee joined them in the wicket-taking celebration.

Southee was rewarded in the 20th over for his persistent streak with a double-wicket maiden.Agarwal was first attracted to Southee’s attention. He then forced a thick outer edge from his bat to the second slip.Tom Latham completed the catch.
Two balls later, Southee caught Ravindra Jadeja with an inswinger for duck.

Jadeja requested a review, but replays showed that the ball crashed into the leg-stump.On a pitch that was weary, Iyer, Saha and Ashwin kept New Zealand at bay.

After India’s impressive recovery, the hosts struck first in New Zealand’s chase. After going past the bat, Ashwin hit Young’s front pad with a low delivery.

Young was given out after Young did not take enough time to review his opening partner Tom Latham.

Young demanded the ‘T” signal, but Young was already out of time and the review was denied.

Young and New Zealand were both disappointed by their inability to quickly take the review. The ball was found to have missed the stumps.Young’s scalp saw Ashwin surpass Harbhajan Singh’s 417 Test wickets.India’s fourth day was a happy one.
