The surgical sponges that were accidentally left in their bodies have been removed.

Anees stated that two of the patients had sponges in their bodies for several day after a cholecystectomy performed by private practitioners.

One patient had a cotton sponge in his pelvis for months after a poor hysterectomy at an inferior medical center.

“The patients who had gauzy sponges in their bodies for several day were suffering from fever, vomiting, and pain.

The sponges were removed after they were examined by CT scans.Private practitioners’ carelessness caused severe damage to the stomach and anterior wall of duodenum.

We were able to remove the gangrenous and damaged portions using the Billroth-II surgical procedures.

“The third patient had cotton sponge and fecal staining in her pelvis for months.

She also suffered from infections and difficulty in bowel control.After a CECT scan, Rectosigmoidectomy was performed and continuity of the hollow viscera was restored using a stapling device.

Anees stated that the patient was discharged following recovery.

He said: “It’s shocking that such egregious mistakes still take place in shady hospitals despite the WHO surgical safety checklist — which was developed after extensive consultation to reduce adverse events.” Stakeholders and doctors have been working together to find solutions to this problem.Leaving objects behind can lead to organ damage, death, and pain.

Anees stated that patients should seek out the best doctors and hospitals with state of the art facilities in order to avoid mishaps.
