Warne not amused by Steve Smith’s return as a leader

Sydney, Nov 27, : Shane Warne, Australian spin wizard, is not amused by the fact that former captain Steve Smith can resume the leadership role, but David Warner would be suspended from captaining or vice captaining his country during his cricket career.
Smith, who was given a one-year ban in 2018 for his involvement with ball-tampering, was elected vice-captain of Australia’s Test side ahead the Ashes series in Brisbane.

Following the ball-tampering incident, also known as ‘Sandpapergate’ and which occurred during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town in 2018, Smith, his deputy David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft were all banned for different periods.

Smith was suspended for one year.

Warner, the vice-captain at the time, was also banned for two years.Warner was also banned from leadership for life.

Warne is not happy about the dichotomy of punishment for the same crime.

He vented his discontent by blaming Smith for not being able to return to leadership.

Warner would be suspended from taking over the leadership role for the Australian team.

Warne wrote Saturday’s column in the Herald Sun, “We all love Steve Smith” “But he shouldn’t be the Australian vice captain.

“Everyone makes mistakes. We know that. And we’ve all moved past sandpaper-gate.That happened under Steve Smith’s captaincy.

He allowed it to happen on his watch.I believe the punishment he received was too harsh, as I stated at the time.He was punished severely for his error.

“But his second chance is playing for Australia again and in my view announcing him vice-captain opens CA (Cricket Australia), for ridicule, criticism and they should throw out the code of conduct.”

Warne also claimed Warner was the “best cricket brain in the team”, and demanded that Marnus Labuschagne be named vice-captain.
