During the meeting in Delhi with a delegation led by S.Niranjan Reddy, irrigation minister, Piyush Goel, the union minister for food distribution, made it clear that the Centre would not purchase parboiled rice from the State during the upcoming Rabi season.

Reddy stated that the Centre’s position was regrettable after the meeting.Reddy stated that they were disappointed to be returning from the national capital.

The minister stated that the Centre did not provide any information about the amount of paddy that would be procured during the ongoing Kharif period. He stated that the Food Corporation of India had promised the state that 45 million tonnes of paddy would be procured.

However, the Centre is now avoiding the issue.

Niranjan Reddy stated that the claim of the state that paddy was grown on more than 62 lakh acres was rejected.

The Centre used delaying tactics, but after the satellite survey, it accepted the claim.

The central minister refused to meet the demand from the state government for procurement targets for the two crops throughout the year, stating that this was impossible.

Piyush Goyal informed the delegation that the Centre on Agriculture issues may create a committee to address the issue following the withdrawal of three new farm law.The committee would make suggestions about MSP, annual target, and alternate crops.

The state repeatedly demanded that the minister make clear its position on procurement for the next season. The union minister informed the delegation that parboiled will not be purchased.

The delegation brought to his attention statements made by state BJP leaders urging state farmers to plant paddy.Goyal assured the delegation that state BJP leaders would not be advised to do so.

The Centre has rejected the demand of the state to increase procurement during this season.Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao will likely hold a meeting with his cabinet members in the next day to discuss the future course of action.

Last week, the chief minister led a dharna’ in Hyderabad to demand that the Centre lift all paddy produced in the country.

He also visited Delhi, but was unable to meet Prime Minister NarendraModi.

Opposition is shaming the TRS government for its slow pace of paddy procurement, which has led to unrest among farmers.

However, the Centre is being blamed by the state government.
