Philippines bans travel to S.Africa, Botswana because of new Covid variant

Manila, November 27, : The Philippines has placed travel restrictions on South Africa, Botswana and their neighbouring countries “effectively immediately” because of concerns about a new Covid-19 variant.
Karlo Nograles, Cabinet Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson, stated that the imposition “heightened border control” was necessary to stop the entry of the variant B.1.1.529.This variant is thought to contain many mutations.

Nograles stated that Friday night’s temporary suspension of international flights from South Africa and Botswana was approved by the government’s Covid-19 task force.

Nograles stated that temporary restrictions will be placed on entry to the Philippines for passengers who have been to or are currently coming from these countries in the 14 days preceding arrival.The ban will remain until December 15.

Nograles stated that the government had directed the Bureau of Quarantine “to coordinate with local government units to locate travelers from these nations who may have arrived in recent seven days prior to the temporary suspension of inbound traveling.”

All passengers transiting through these countries are allowed to enter, but must follow existing quarantine and testing protocols.

The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH), reported 863 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19), on Friday.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 2,830 387 in the Southeast Asian country.

For three consecutive days, the Philippines has seen less than 1,000 cases.

The DOH reported that 142 more people died of Covid-19 complications, bringing to 48,017 the death toll in the country.
