He said that Rahul Dravid, the head coach, and Ajinkya Rahane, the captain, had encouraged him to perform well before the match began.Iyer made his Test debut memorable with a run of 105 runs from 171 balls.

He was laced by 13 fours, and two sixes.
“I didn’t know I was going to play when I arrived in Kanpur.

Rahul sir, the skipper, told me that I was going for the match.I was forced to adopt the mindset of playing red-ball cricket.

My last match was Irani Trophy (Cup) almost three years ago.I saw this as an opportunity to challenge myself and a challenge because after playing white-ball cricket for so many years, then switching to red-ball cricket it is a completely different game.Iyer said that the mindset and routine must be right after day two of the virtual press conference.

“That’s what my focus was on, rather than how and who I would play on the ground.

I discarded all thoughts and focused on my processes.I know that I have the skills, and that was something I needed to focus on.I was also inspired by Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane, and the rest of the team. They said that you don’t need to change anything because you’ve played this format before and have scored so much runs in Ranji Trophy with an extremely high average.

Iyer, who became 16th Indian batter to reach Test hundred, said that this was his mindset before he came on the ground.

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary India batter, presented Iyer with his Test cap on the morning of his Test debut.Iyer described the experience as “a fairytale”.I had no idea that I would receive the cap from Sunil sir.I was sure Rahul sir would give it to me.Both of them are legends of the game, and either one would have given me my cap, I would be happy. It was a wonderful feeling, and the way everything turned out, it was great. But I wasn’t satisfied today.

Before presenting the cap, he also shared what Gavaskar had told him.Sunil Gavaskar sir gave the cap to me.He said to me, “You don’t need to think about your future or your past, all you have is the present, and you can focus on the n’xt ball.” That’s what I’ve been doing. My goal is to focus on today and not worry about the future. If I think about it, I won’t feel present and won’t have the ability to perform on a given date.

I will take whatever happens as a blessing and move on.

Iyer hopes India will get a good start Saturday after New Zealand was 129/0 at stumps.”It’s going be a very challenging day for us tomorrow with New Zealand getting off to an excellent start. The wicket is not helping the bowlers.

We need to be more focused on giving less runs and building more pressure. One wicket could change the momentum in our favor.

It will shift the momentum once the ball starts spinning or cracks begin to open on the wicket.I hope we get off to an excellent start tomorrow.”

The 26-year old is optimistic of inviting Pravin Amre, his former India cricketer, to dinner.Pravin sir keeps reminding me that I have accomplished a lot in my life.

You have been the captain for an IPL team and you have scored runs. But that was in white-ball cricket.

Your main achievement would be the Test cap, and he would be very happy about it.He used to say, “I will only come to dinner at your place if you score 100”.So, after today’s century I will message him and invite to dinner.

He said goodbye by saying that his century in Test cricket would make him happy.”My dad loves Test match Cricket the most.It would be a great achievement for me to give him the gift of a century. It’s a wonderful feeling for us both.My mom and dad have been the pillars of our success so far and supported me throughout my journey.

My entire family deserves my gratitude for being supportive.
