Bhubaneswar : , The International Hockey Federation’s (FIH’s) preparations for the live streaming (FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup) proved inadequate as their mobile app (app) crashed just before the India versus France match because of heavy traffic. According to the FIH, it has requested its partner to ensure that such problems don’t happen again.
Star Sports, the official rights holder of all FIH events, took over the broadcast of the event from December 1.With the start of the knockouts FIH had made the decision to remove geographic barriers for India so that everyone could watch the live streaming of matches via its mobile app, Watch.Hockey, and its website.
It appears that FIH and its partners Nagra (a Kudelski Group company) were not prepared for the massive traffic as lakhs upon lakhs of Indian fans attempted to log in to the app and website to access live information about the match.
The site crashed, and no one could view the match live or receive live updates.
“FIH, on behalf of the global hockey community is very disappointed with the issues encountered during Watch.Hockey’s live streaming of today’s FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021 game between India and France.FIH immediately contacted Nagra, its partner, to obtain a full explanation and ensure that such problems will not be faced again,” the FIH stated in a statement to IANS.
The problem started in the morning when many people tried to log into the app, but couldn’t access the live video.Although things were quickly resolved and people could view the Belgium versus South Africa match and other matches that day, things got a lot worse in the evening when people began logging in in large numbers in advance of India’s match with France.
The website and app went down, with viewers seeing only a blank screen and old content.
FIH hoped such problems would not occur in future matches.
It stated that it was looking forward to welcoming more hockey fans on Watch.Hockey as the event progresses.
