India’s Total Fertility Ratio drops to 2 nationwide

New Delhi, Nov 24, : India’s Total fertility rate (TFR) has declined further from 2.2 to 2.At the national level, it ranged from 1.4% in Chandigarh and 2.4 in Uttar Pradesh according to a Health Ministry survey.
Dr Vinod Kumar Paul (NITI Aayog Member, Health) and Rajesh Bhushan (Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary) released factsheets containing key indicators on population, reproductive and children health for India and 14 States and UTs that were part of Phase 2 of the National Family Health Survey 5 (2019-21).

The survey revealed that all Phase 2 states had achieved replacement fertility level (2.1), except Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

The survey revealed that the overall Contraceptive Prevalence Ratio (CPR) has significantly increased from 54% to 67% at all-India levels and in almost all Phase 2 states/UTs, with the exception of Punjab.Modern contraceptive methods have also seen an increase in almost all states and UTs.

The key indicator from the Health Ministry survey revealed that the unmet family planning needs have seen a significant decrease from 13 percent to 9 percent at all-Indian level and in most of Phase 2 states/UTs.The unmet spacing need, which was a major problem in India in the past, has fallen to less than 10% in all states, except Jharkhand (12%) and Arunachal Pradesh/Uttar Pradesh (13%) respectively.

According to the survey, full immunization rates among children aged 12 to 23 months have seen a significant improvement in their overall levels from 62 percent to 76 percent at all-Indian level.One-fourth of the 14 states/UTs have at least one-fourth of their children aged 12-23 months fully immunized.

Odisha has the highest percentage of this number at 90 percent.

Comparing the NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 data shows that the increase in immunization coverage has been rapid in many states and UTs.In just four years, more than 50 percent of Phase 2 states/UTs have shared over 10 percentage points.
